Company Description
If you are a talented educational leader, we would like to hear from you. Although we may not have an opening currently, we welcome your application to help us plan for future opportunities.
Currently, Uncommon manages 53 schools across five cities including Boston, Camden, New York City, Newark, and Rochester, serving more than 20,000 students.
Job Description
The Uncommon Schools Principal Fellowship was created to strategically identify, develop, and train rising leaders. As we continue to grow and maintain the highest standards for all of our schools, it is critical to prepare our future leaders in an environment immersed in the successful practices of our current schools and the thoughtful leadership of our Principal leaders.
The Principal Fellowship provides a robust development process to prepare leaders to lead a school in conjunction with the Director of Operations. This Principal Fellow and eventual Principal is a full-time employee, hired, supported, and evaluated by the Regional Superintendent of Instruction and the Senior Director of School Support. The fellowship is based on a foundation of core elements aligned to the competencies of Uncommon Principals. Each element is designed to build Principal Fellows capacity towards becoming effective instructional school leaders:
Feedback and Assessment
The core instrument for fostering growth in the Principal Fellow's leadership capacity is individualized feedback. It is the central driver in enhancing our schools from average to exceptional. The Principal Fellow will receive feedback formally and informally throughout the year, with informal feedback offered during their time in schools, professional development sessions, and cohort get-togethers. The feedback will come from the Host Principal, Assistant Superintendent, and Senior Executive Director of School Support.
School Immersion
It is important for Principal Fellows to have control over their learning experience by being in the driver's seat. This empowerment allows for greater growth as a leader and overall better preparation for assuming the role of a school leader.
Professional Development
Our cross-regional professional development program provides the Principal Fellows with a rare chance to learn alongside their Principals and colleagues. Through this collaborative experience, they can gain a new perspective on best practices and develop their own leadership abilities.
Past participants have rated the workshops highly, and have found them to be most effective when they can immediately implement their learnings in their own school context.
